چکیده

Methods Via CMR (1.5T GE, WI), 35 carotid arteries of 18 asymptomatic, ‘statin naïve’ patients with maximum carotid stenosis >50% (mean 64±21), were imaged at baseline and following 12 months of randomized, blinded statin therapy (simvastatin 40mg or Vytorin (Ezetimibe 10mg/ simvastatin 40mg)). The effects of statins on these lesions were evaluated as changes in carotid outer wall area (OWA), lumen area (LuA), vessel wall area (VWA), lipid area (LpA) and lipid percentage (Lp%). The percentage of stenosis of each slice was determined in reference to a normal or near normal sl.

Volumetric intracoronary ultrasound: a new maximum confidence approach for the quantitative assessment of progression-regression of atherosclerosis?

Quantitative assessment of atherosclerosis during its natural history and following therapeutic interventions is important, as cardiovascular disease remains the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality in industrial societies. While coronary angiography delineates the vessel lumen, permitting only the indirect determination of atherosclerotic wall changes encroaching upon the lumen, i...

Decreased Intima-Media Carotid Artery Thickness after 24 Sessions of Combined Aerobic and Resistance Exercise in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Background and Objective: Diabetes type 2 has been estimated as the seventh leading cause of death worldwide. Diabetic patients are 2-3 times more likely to be at the risk of atherosclerosis, compared to normal people. It has been reported that exercise prevents atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on vascular variables...

Variations in atherosclerosis and remodeling patterns in aorta and carotids

BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis is a progressive disease that causes vascular remodeling that can be positive or negative. The evolution of arterial wall thickening and changes in lumen size under current "standard of care" in different arterial beds is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine arterial remodeling and progression/regression of atherosclerosis in aorta and carotid arteries of...

The natural course of atherosclerosis. Part I: incidence and progression.

The natural course of early atherogenesis is not well established. The current prospective survey was designed to monitor 5-year changes in carotid atherosclerosis in a large, stratified random sample of the general population using high-resolution duplex ultrasound (Bruneck Study). Incidence rates of carotid atherosclerosis ranged from near zero to 184 per 1000 person-years. Most atherosclerot...

Arterial Imaging and Atherosclerosis Reversal

This review explores evidence for the reversibility of atherosclerosis and augmentation of angiography with noninvasive arterial wall imaging. Meta-analysis from coronary angiographic trials demonstrates that regression and stabilization are 1.5 to 2 times more common in treated than placebo subjects, and progression is reduced by half in treated subjects. Odds ratios for clinical coronary even...
